What is Vaginal Seeding?

Vaginal what?!?!

Vaginal Seeding is the practice of swabbing your vaginal fluids with a cotton swab to transfer the vaginal flora to the mouth, nose and skin to your newborn baby.

But why would you do that?

The intended purpose of vaginal seeding is to transfer maternal vaginal bacteria to your newborn if they were born via cesarean.

Although this practice may not be supported by organizations like The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), they are in agreement with the effects that the vaginal fluids play in your newborns health.

Vaginal Seeding allows for proper colonization of the fetal gut (microbiome), and therefore reduces the risk of asthma, disease and immune disorders. Ultimately, it is my belief and many others that vaginal seeding leads to healthier gut and respiratory health in newborns.

Ok, how???

After your baby is born, have your support person (significant other or doula) swab your vulva and vaginal opening, then use that same swab and transfer those vaginal fluids into the mouth and nose, and skin of your baby.
