You trained to be with families, not to run a business
Most doulas leave the work they love because the business side wears them down. The marketing, the invoicing, the contracts, the inquiries that come in at midnight, the on-call weeks with nobody behind you.
We built How2Mom so that part is already handled. You show up for the family. We hold everything around it.
If you've been solo, you know the rhythm
A birth ends at four in the morning and you are still answering an inquiry email at seven.
A birth comes up during a family wedding, and there's no one to back you up
A hard or complex case comes up and there is no one to call.
This is the part we took off the table.

Families supported each year
A contractor, with a whole business behind you
We carry the brand, the marketing, the client pipeline, the contracts, the billing, and the systems. Our doulas carry the care.
You stay an independent contractor. You keep your autonomy, your certification path, and your own business identity if you have one.
What changes is that you are no longer doing it alone.
Clients come to you
We market, we field inquiries, we run consults, and we match families. No cold outreach, no chasing referrals, no ad spend out of your pocket.
Contracts and paperwork
Client agreements, intake forms, and documentation are built and signed before you meet the family.
Billing and payment
We invoice the client, manage deposits and payment plans, and follow up. You get paid on a set schedule.
A brand families trust
Families know the How2Mom name before they know yours. You walk in with trust already built.
Systems that scale
Scheduling, client notes, communication templates, and a shared calendar so nothing sits in your inbox.
Ongoing education
Team trainings, case debriefs, and access to our courses and continuing education.
You always have a backup
Working solo means one birth, one body, one plan. If your child spikes a fever at two in the morning and your client is in early labor, there is no version of that night that feels good.
On our team, there is.
- Backup for births. Every client is covered by more than one of us. If you cannot get there, someone can.
- Backup for hard cases. A long labor, a difficult family dynamic, a transfer, a loss. You have experienced doulas to text at three in the morning and a lead to call in.
- Backup for your life. Family emergencies, illness, vacation, the birthday you want to be at. Tell us and we cover it.
- Backup for scope. When something sits outside doula scope, we know who to bring in. We work alongside lactation consultants, pelvic floor therapists, mental health providers, and medical teams.
How pay works
If you have run your own practice, this is the math you are already doing. Here is how it works on our team.
- Who Sets the Rates: Most of the doulas that join our team, see an increase in their package rates. Our current packages can be found on the birth doula and postpartum doula pages.
- Your Share: Depending on the length of your commitment with How2Mom, your share may range from 75-85% of the package rate.
- When you are paid: You are paid half your rate the week you are hired for birth doula services (and the 2nd half after birth), and you are paid weekly for postpartum services.
The people you would be working alongside
We are a small team that shows up for each other, on call and off. This is who you would be learning with, leaning on, and covering for.
Founder and birth doula
Stephanie Sinclair
I finished my birth doula training in April 2015 and started serving families right away. Since then I have added postpartum support, childbirth education, lactation counseling, and placenta encapsulation, and grown How2Mom into a team of birth professionals. I built it so doulas can focus on the families while the business side is already handled. I want this to be a place where no one does this work alone.
Partner and Birth Doula
Nikki Zweber
I am a DONA International certified birth doula, and my own two water births with a doula are what led me to this work. I have supported unmedicated and medicated births, planned cesareans, and births at home, in hospitals, and at birth centers. I love research and evidence-based care. If you join us, you will hear me say it more than once: there is no wrong way to birth a baby.

Before you reach out
Joining the How2Mom team
Do I stay an independent contractor?
Yes. You stay an independent contractor. We handle the marketing, client inquiries, contracts, and billing, and you show up for the families we match you with.
How does pay work?
You are paid at least once a month for your share of the client revenue that came in that month. We invoice the client, manage deposits and payment plans, and follow up, so you are not chasing payments.
Can I keep my own doula business?
Yes. You are welcome to keep your stand-alone business. Our goal is to keep you busy with How2Mom clients, so you can spend less time marketing yourself and more time with families.
How many births would I take each month?
Birth doulas on our team are available for a minimum of two births a month, up to four. We talk through what fits your life during your conversation with Stephanie.
What shifts do postpartum doulas work?
Postpartum doulas on our team work overnight shifts. If you need a different arrangement, we can talk about it, and anything outside of overnights is negotiated individually.
Do I have to find my own clients?
No. Client acquisition is on us. We market, we field the inquiries, we run consults, and we match families with the doula who fits.
What happens if I cannot make a birth?
You tell us as early as you can and we activate backup. Every client is covered by more than one of us, so you are never the only plan.
Do I need to be certified?
We are looking for doulas who are certified or actively in a certification process with a recognized training organization. If you are mid-training, tell us where you are.
What happens after I fill out the inquiry form?
We email you a link to the full application. Once you submit it, Stephanie reaches out to schedule a conversation about how you work and whether this feels like a fit for both of us.
What does onboarding look like?
We sign your contractor agreement and walk you through our systems, including your private custom client portal, our Dubsado CRM, and the client packet. You will not be figuring it out on your own.
Do I need to live in the Twin Cities?
Yes. Our families are throughout the Minneapolis and St. Paul metro, so we are looking for doulas based in the metro who can reach hospitals, birth centers, and homes in a reasonable window.
Are you hiring lactation consultants?
Not right now. Our current openings are for birth and postpartum doulas. That can change, so check back or reach out and we will keep your info on file.

We chose to work with How 2 Mom because it was our first pregnancy and wanted extra support through the process. During our pregnancy and birth, our doulas Nikki and Meghan supported us by meeting beforehand to discuss any fears we had, educated us on what to expect along the way and helped guide us while we created a birth plan. Having a doula made a difference because they were there to help advocate for us, create a calm and supportive environment, and make sure we had the best possible experience while bringing our daughter into the world. I would recommend and have recommended How 2 Mom to any family’s looking for a Doula. We will definitely be using them again for future pregnancies!Posted on Google![]()

My first birth experience wasn't what I had envisioned, so when I became pregnant with my second, I knew I wanted something different. That's when Stephanie came highly recommended to me, and I'm so grateful she did. Stephanie gave me the confidence I needed for my second labor and delivery! I got my redemption birth! Stephanie helped me unpack my first labor, and then helped me ask better advocating questions the second time. I also knew I wanted a less traditional offering, I didn’t need a doula onsite during labor and delivery. I needed her to help me prepare and she was completely accommodating as we created an offering that worked for me!Posted on Google![]()

We chose to work with How 2 Mom because we wanted to feel as prepared and confident as possible in the choices we were making before, during, and after birth. Throughout pregnancy and birth, our doulas Stephanie and Nikki supported us in so many ways. They came to our house twice before birth, helped us create a birth plan, walked through any fears or emotions either of us had, and answered all of our questions whenever we needed them. Having that support throughout pregnancy helped us feel so much more educated, reassured, and at ease going into birth. When labor started, Nikki was incredibly supportive and helped guide both of us through the entire process. While I was laboring at home, she helped Alex feel confident knowing when it was time to head to the hospital. During birth, she truly felt like a second set of hands for him — making sure we were fed, helping me through different laboring positions, keeping us both calm, and speaking so many positive affirmations throughout the experience. Her presence brought such a sense of peace and reassurance, and having her there allowed us to feel fully supported and present during one of the biggest moments of our lives. After birth, they continued checking in on us, came to our house postpartum, and even recommended pediatricians for our baby. Having a doula made such a difference because it empowered us throughout the entire process and gave us so much peace of mind going into birth. We felt educated, supported, cared for, and far less anxious. It truly was the best birth experience we could have ever asked for. I would absolutely recommend How 2 Mom to any family wanting to feel supported, empowered, educated, reassured, and cared for throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Their support made us feel like we never had to navigate any part of the experience alone.Posted on Google![]()

I truly can’t imagine giving birth without Nikki at How2Mom. She was such a calm, supportive presence throughout my entire labor and made me feel so at ease during such a life changing experience. We had a bit of a scare when our daughter had to go to the NICU because of breathing issues. While my husband went with our daughter to the NICU, Nikki stayed right by my side, keeping me calm and reassuring me that everything was going to be okay. In such an emotional and uncertain moment, her steady presence meant more than I can put into words. I highly recommend her and How2Mom to anyone looking for a doula who will advocate for you, support you, and make you feel completely cared for throughout the entire experience.Posted on Google![]()

I could go on and on about Stephanie and How2Mom. Stephanie was referred to me by a friend and I truly believe she changed my life for the better. I was having a hard time with my doctors listening to my wants and needs during pregnancy and Stephanie helped me find my voice! This lead to an amazing labor and delivery and I could not be more grateful. She is great at communicating, is fully supportive of your plan, explains every step of pregnancy/labor and delivery and postpartum extremely well, and is overall a genuine person. I was able to lean on Stephanie through every aspect of becoming a mom and I could not have done it without her! My husband even jokes that next pregnancy Stephanie and I can do it without him. Ha! I also got my placenta encapsulated and my placenta tincture from Stephanie. She was able to get it to me very quickly and gave amazing directions on how to use them. Again, she was there to answer all of my questions and I am so very grateful! Everyone needs Stephanie in their pregnancies and life! Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do! Updated 3 years later to add: Having Stephanie as a doula for our second baby was just as good, if not better, than the first time! We were able to take a Childbirth Education class with her (we didn't the first time due to covid) and it was so nice to have a refresher and all be on the same page even more so this go around. Stephanie quite literally held my body up during labor when I felt like I couldn't do it myself. She is encouraging, empowering, and makes you feel like you can conquer the world (and your birth). Hire her and the How2Mom team. You will not regret it!Posted on Google![]()

My husband and I were so happy that we had Nikki from How2Mom on our birth team. She was knowledgable and professional, while being personable, kind and caring. She was so supportive of us throughout the entire process from pregnancy, birth and beyond and I was so happy to feel her comforting presence when she was able to join us in the OR for an unexpected C-section. She was available to answer questions or offer support day or night. She is truly passionate about being a doula and it shows in every interaction that we had with her. I would highly recommend Nikki and How2Mom to be your doula!Posted on Google![]()

I could not even begin to express the deep impact that Stephanie had on me and my family during the months leading up to and following the birth of our daughter in late 2022. Stephanie was an amazing maternity, delivery, and postpartum coach and mentor; she guided me through this process with unwavering care and support. She gave me the confidence and preparation to ask the right questions at my doctor appointments and at the hospital, and ultimately make the right decisions for me and my baby during delivery. I know my outcome was the best possible outcome for me thanks to Stephanie’s commitment to my maternity journey and I couldn’t recommend her more as a doula!!! Update: worked with Stephanie again for my 2nd birth in 2025. She and the How2Mom team are still the best of the best, but wanted to add that she now has an absolutely phenomenal lactation expert on her team (Michelle). Michelle is so knowledgeable and is an amazing lactation problem-solver; she was able to get baby to latch when we had almost lost hope. Cannot thank Stephanie and Michelle enough for their amazing care and support…they are truly best in class at what they do.Posted on Google![]()

After my husband and I found out we were expecting our second child, one of the first decisions we made was to hire Stephanie as our doula again. Even though we had been through it all once before, we still knew how priceless it would be to have her a part of this journey - and man, was I glad we had her. Despite my first baby coming a day early, this second baby took her sweet time and arrived eight days late. Stephanie was there for me every step of those tiring, uncomfortable, mentally exhausting days. She gave me daily encouragement, connected me with a fantastic chiropractor who helped me prepare my body, sent me articles with tips and tricks, and answered every late night “maybe tonight” text. She talked me through my impending induction, made sure I knew all of my options, and encouraged me and my husband to lead the way with every decision. When induction finally got me into labor, Stephanie was there to help me through contractions, get my body ready, involve my husband during labor, and was by my side as I delivered our baby. Even though the timing of this birth was not what I had planned, Stephanie helped me bring to fruition the peaceful and empowering labor and delivery we had been planning for. And just like after our first birth, the care didn’t stop there. She stayed in touch for weeks answering all of our questions, sharing contacts of expert colleagues, and making sure our transition to a family of four was going well. I cannot imagine going through pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum without Stephanie.Posted on Google![]()

Hiring Nikki from the How 2 Mom team was such an important part of welcoming our daughter into this world. If you're on the fence about wanting a doula I 100% would advocate that they are an invaluable resource. Nikki helped make myself and husband so much more confident going into birth. When things escalated quickly in birth she was the first call my husband made. The support and communication was top notch. We both feel like working with Nikki and having a doula exceeded our expectations. Thank you Nikki and How 2 Mom team.Posted on Google![]()

We had the best experience with our birth doula, Stephanie. She went above and beyond to make my husband and I comfortable and calm throughout our daughter’s birth. She kept us informed of all of our options and was such an advocate. We had the most beautiful and special birth because of Stephanie’s care and encouragement.
We would love to meet you
