Postpartum Doula Services in the Twin Cities Metro

It's 3am. The baby is finally asleep, and you're still awake, wondering if any of this is going the way it's supposed to.

If that’s where you are, nothing has gone wrong. The first weeks at home ask more of a family than anyone really prepares them for.

Our postpartum doula services bring steady, in-home support to that stretch. We come to your home during the day or overnight, and we help with rest, feeding, newborn care, and the hundred small things that pile up while you’re healing.

You don't have to figure this part out alone

You have the nursery finished. You have the car seat installed. You have read everything there is to read about getting the baby here.

And then you are home. Who is actually going to be here with me? Your partner goes back to work. Your visitors hold the baby and then leave. A postpartum doula is the one person whose whole job is you. Not the feeding log, not the visitors, not the clock. You.

We are How2Mom, a full-service birth and postpartum agency. We have supported families through first babies, fourth babies, twins, cesarean recoveries, NICU homecomings, weeks of cluster feeding, bottles, nursing, pumping, and plenty of postpartums that went nowhere near the plan.

Here is what we know after all of it. Recovery is not linear.

What you need in week one may be nothing like what you need in week six. We are trained to move with that, and we stay with you the whole way.

What is a postpartum doula?

A postpartum doula is a trained professional who provides practical, emotional, and informational support in your home during the weeks after birth.

Same word as a birth doula, different season. A birth doula gets you through a day. A postpartum doula walks with you through the weeks after, when the house goes quiet and the real learning starts.

In practice, that looks like someone who knows newborns, knows recovery, and knows how to read a room. Some visits are mostly feeding and sleep. Some are laundry and a warm meal. Some are mostly listening.

What a postpartum doula does

  • Cares for your baby so you can sleep, shower, or eat with two hands
  • Helps with feeding, whether that is nursing, pumping, bottles, or some mix of all three
  • Shares what is normal in recovery, and what is worth a call to your provider
  • Supports your partner, and helps older siblings adjust
  • Handles the small things: a load of laundry, a meal, the dishes in the sink
  • Comes back. Same doula, week after week.

What a postpartum doula does not do

  • We do not diagnose or treat, for you or for the baby
  • We do not replace your provider, your lactation consultant, or your therapist
  • We do not sleep train or decide your schedule for you
  • We do not take over your house or your baby

Your provider handles the clinical care. Your lactation consultant handles the hard feeding questions. We handle the day to day, and we stay in our lane on purpose. That is what makes the whole team work.

What a shift actually looks like

Most families tell us they waited longer than they meant to before asking. Not because things were fine, but because they were not sure this counted as needing help yet.

Nobody has to be drowning to deserve support. Here is what a shift actually looks like, so you can picture it before you decide.

Starting at 4 hours

Daytime support

We come during the day so you can do the things that keep falling off the list.

  • You sleep. We keep the baby with us, and we wake you to feed if that is what you want.
  • We help with a feed, whether that is latch, positioning, pumping, or a bottle.
  • We bring you food and water, and we make something you can eat later with one hand.
  • We take care of light house cleaning, so the kitchen and the laundry do not pile up.
  • We answer the questions you have been collecting all week.
  • If there is a toddler in the house, we help them feel like they still have a place in this.

Some days that means you sleep for three hours. Some days it means you talk the whole time. Both are the right use of a shift.

Starting at 8 hours

Overnight support

We arrive at bedtime and you go to sleep. That is the whole point.

  • We take the wake-ups. If you are nursing, we bring the baby to you and take them back after, so you stay in bed.
  • If you are bottle feeding, we handle feeds start to finish and you do not get up at all.
  • We change, burp, soothe, and settle.
  • We wash and set up bottles and pump parts for the next day.
  • We leave you a note about how the night went, so you are not guessing in the morning.

You wake up to a quiet house, bottles ready for the day, and sleep that finally connected.

Families call this different things. Night doula. Night nurse. Overnight newborn care specialist. We are not nurses and we do not provide medical care. What we do is trained, hands-on newborn care and recovery support overnight, which for most families is exactly what the night needs.

Every Postpartum Doula Client Perks

You might be wondering if any of our services are covered by insurance. The answer: that depends.

A team, not one person

You are matched with your own doula, and she has the whole How2Mom team behind her. If she is ever unavailable, or a question lands outside her lane, someone who knows your family steps in.

Our provider network

Pelvic floor therapy, chiropractic care, mental health support. Reach out any time and we will connect you with a trusted provider we already work alongside.

Lactation support

Feeding questions rarely wait for business hours. Included is a check-in with our Lactation Counselor whenever you need one, breast, chest, bottle, or a mix.

Postpartum nutrition

Eating well is hard when you are barely sitting down. Our clients receive a free discovery call with a Registered Dietitian to help rebuild your energy.

Postpartum Essentials Course

Support does not stop when we leave. All clients get our Postpartum Essentials Course and Postpartum Care Plan, there for the questions that come up between visits.

Motherhood affirmation cards

All clients receive our digital Motherhood Affirmation Cards, yours to print at home, because we all need a little encouragement some days.

Most agencies sell these as add-ons. We include them, because recovery is rarely the work of one person. We would rather hand you the whole team.

Insurance, HSA/FSA and Coverage

You might be wondering if any of our services are covered by insurance. The answer: that depends.

HSA and FSA

Postpartum doula services are generally eligible for HSA and FSA funds. Many of our families pay this way. Your plan administrator can confirm what they need from you, and we provide the documentation.

Employer family-forming benefits

This is the one many families do not know about.

Many employers now offer family-forming benefits that reimburse doula care. Carrot is the most common one we see, and some plans reimburse up to $2,000. Several large Twin Cities employers include this benefit.

Superbills for reimbursement

We provide an itemized superbill for your postpartum care that you can submit to your insurer or benefits provider. Reimbursement depends on your plan, and we cannot promise an outcome, but we can make sure you have exactly what they ask for.

Is having a postpartum doula on your team right for you?

We chose to work with How 2 Mom because it was our first pregnancy and wanted extra support through the process. During our pregnancy and birth, our doulas Nikki and Meghan supported us by meeting beforehand to discuss any fears we had, educated us on what to expect along the way and helped guide us while we created a birth plan. Having a doula made a difference because they were there to help advocate for us, create a calm and supportive environment, and make sure we had the best possible experience while bringing our daughter into the world. I would recommend and have recommended How 2 Mom to any family’s looking for a Doula. We will definitely be using them again for future pregnancies!

My first birth experience wasn't what I had envisioned, so when I became pregnant with my second, I knew I wanted something different. That's when Stephanie came highly recommended to me, and I'm so grateful she did. Stephanie gave me the confidence I needed for my second labor and delivery! I got my redemption birth! Stephanie helped me unpack my first labor, and then helped me ask better advocating questions the second time. I also knew I wanted a less traditional offering, I didn’t need a doula onsite during labor and delivery. I needed her to help me prepare and she was completely accommodating as we created an offering that worked for me!

We chose to work with How 2 Mom because we wanted to feel as prepared and confident as possible in the choices we were making before, during, and after birth. Throughout pregnancy and birth, our doulas Stephanie and Nikki supported us in so many ways. They came to our house twice before birth, helped us create a birth plan, walked through any fears or emotions either of us had, and answered all of our questions whenever we needed them. Having that support throughout pregnancy helped us feel so much more educated, reassured, and at ease going into birth. When labor started, Nikki was incredibly supportive and helped guide both of us through the entire process. While I was laboring at home, she helped Alex feel confident knowing when it was time to head to the hospital. During birth, she truly felt like a second set of hands for him — making sure we were fed, helping me through different laboring positions, keeping us both calm, and speaking so many positive affirmations throughout the experience. Her presence brought such a sense of peace and reassurance, and having her there allowed us to feel fully supported and present during one of the biggest moments of our lives. After birth, they continued checking in on us, came to our house postpartum, and even recommended pediatricians for our baby. Having a doula made such a difference because it empowered us throughout the entire process and gave us so much peace of mind going into birth. We felt educated, supported, cared for, and far less anxious. It truly was the best birth experience we could have ever asked for. I would absolutely recommend How 2 Mom to any family wanting to feel supported, empowered, educated, reassured, and cared for throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Their support made us feel like we never had to navigate any part of the experience alone.

I truly can’t imagine giving birth without Nikki at How2Mom. She was such a calm, supportive presence throughout my entire labor and made me feel so at ease during such a life changing experience. We had a bit of a scare when our daughter had to go to the NICU because of breathing issues. While my husband went with our daughter to the NICU, Nikki stayed right by my side, keeping me calm and reassuring me that everything was going to be okay. In such an emotional and uncertain moment, her steady presence meant more than I can put into words. I highly recommend her and How2Mom to anyone looking for a doula who will advocate for you, support you, and make you feel completely cared for throughout the entire experience.

I could go on and on about Stephanie and How2Mom. Stephanie was referred to me by a friend and I truly believe she changed my life for the better. I was having a hard time with my doctors listening to my wants and needs during pregnancy and Stephanie helped me find my voice! This lead to an amazing labor and delivery and I could not be more grateful. She is great at communicating, is fully supportive of your plan, explains every step of pregnancy/labor and delivery and postpartum extremely well, and is overall a genuine person. I was able to lean on Stephanie through every aspect of becoming a mom and I could not have done it without her! My husband even jokes that next pregnancy Stephanie and I can do it without him. Ha! I also got my placenta encapsulated and my placenta tincture from Stephanie. She was able to get it to me very quickly and gave amazing directions on how to use them. Again, she was there to answer all of my questions and I am so very grateful! Everyone needs Stephanie in their pregnancies and life! Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do! Updated 3 years later to add: Having Stephanie as a doula for our second baby was just as good, if not better, than the first time! We were able to take a Childbirth Education class with her (we didn't the first time due to covid) and it was so nice to have a refresher and all be on the same page even more so this go around. Stephanie quite literally held my body up during labor when I felt like I couldn't do it myself. She is encouraging, empowering, and makes you feel like you can conquer the world (and your birth). Hire her and the How2Mom team. You will not regret it!

My husband and I were so happy that we had Nikki from How2Mom on our birth team. She was knowledgable and professional, while being personable, kind and caring. She was so supportive of us throughout the entire process from pregnancy, birth and beyond and I was so happy to feel her comforting presence when she was able to join us in the OR for an unexpected C-section. She was available to answer questions or offer support day or night. She is truly passionate about being a doula and it shows in every interaction that we had with her. I would highly recommend Nikki and How2Mom to be your doula!

I could not even begin to express the deep impact that Stephanie had on me and my family during the months leading up to and following the birth of our daughter in late 2022. Stephanie was an amazing maternity, delivery, and postpartum coach and mentor; she guided me through this process with unwavering care and support. She gave me the confidence and preparation to ask the right questions at my doctor appointments and at the hospital, and ultimately make the right decisions for me and my baby during delivery. I know my outcome was the best possible outcome for me thanks to Stephanie’s commitment to my maternity journey and I couldn’t recommend her more as a doula!!! Update: worked with Stephanie again for my 2nd birth in 2025. She and the How2Mom team are still the best of the best, but wanted to add that she now has an absolutely phenomenal lactation expert on her team (Michelle). Michelle is so knowledgeable and is an amazing lactation problem-solver; she was able to get baby to latch when we had almost lost hope. Cannot thank Stephanie and Michelle enough for their amazing care and support…they are truly best in class at what they do.

After my husband and I found out we were expecting our second child, one of the first decisions we made was to hire Stephanie as our doula again. Even though we had been through it all once before, we still knew how priceless it would be to have her a part of this journey - and man, was I glad we had her. Despite my first baby coming a day early, this second baby took her sweet time and arrived eight days late. Stephanie was there for me every step of those tiring, uncomfortable, mentally exhausting days. She gave me daily encouragement, connected me with a fantastic chiropractor who helped me prepare my body, sent me articles with tips and tricks, and answered every late night “maybe tonight” text. She talked me through my impending induction, made sure I knew all of my options, and encouraged me and my husband to lead the way with every decision. When induction finally got me into labor, Stephanie was there to help me through contractions, get my body ready, involve my husband during labor, and was by my side as I delivered our baby. Even though the timing of this birth was not what I had planned, Stephanie helped me bring to fruition the peaceful and empowering labor and delivery we had been planning for. And just like after our first birth, the care didn’t stop there. She stayed in touch for weeks answering all of our questions, sharing contacts of expert colleagues, and making sure our transition to a family of four was going well. I cannot imagine going through pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum without Stephanie.

Hiring Nikki from the How 2 Mom team was such an important part of welcoming our daughter into this world. If you're on the fence about wanting a doula I 100% would advocate that they are an invaluable resource. Nikki helped make myself and husband so much more confident going into birth. When things escalated quickly in birth she was the first call my husband made. The support and communication was top notch. We both feel like working with Nikki and having a doula exceeded our expectations. Thank you Nikki and How 2 Mom team.

We had the best experience with our birth doula, Stephanie. She went above and beyond to make my husband and I comfortable and calm throughout our daughter’s birth. She kept us informed of all of our options and was such an advocate. We had the most beautiful and special birth because of Stephanie’s care and encouragement.

Postpartum doula FAQs

What does a postpartum doula do?

A postpartum doula provides in-home support in the weeks after birth. That includes newborn care, feeding support whether you are nursing, pumping, or using bottles, light house cleaning and meal prep, recovery support, and help for partners and older siblings. Postpartum doulas do not provide clinical care.

How much does a postpartum doula cost in Minneapolis?

How2Mom package rates are $55 an hour, or $49.50 an hour on our 200 hour package. A daytime visit starts at 4 hours and runs $220. An overnight starts at 8 hours and runs $440. Packages range from $1,760 for 32 hours up to $9,900 for 200 hours, and every package has a payment plan.

What is the difference between a postpartum doula and a night nurse?

Families call overnight support different things. Night doula. Night nurse. Overnight newborn care specialist. We are not nurses and we do not provide medical care. What we provide is trained, hands-on newborn care and recovery support overnight, which for most families is exactly what the night needs.

What is the minimum amount of support I can book?

All postpartum doula services start at a minimum of 4 overnights or 8 day shifts. That works out to 32 hours either way, which is our Settling In package. You can always add on later if you want more.

Can I use my HSA or FSA for postpartum doula services?

Postpartum doula services are generally eligible for HSA and FSA funds, and many of our families pay this way. Your plan administrator can confirm what they need from you, and we provide the documentation.

Does insurance cover postpartum doula care?

What we see work most often is employer family-forming benefits. Many employers now offer benefits that reimburse doula care. Carrot is the most common one we see, and some plans reimburse up to $2,000. Several large Twin Cities employers include this benefit. We also provide an itemized superbill you can submit to your insurer or benefits provider. Reimbursement depends on your plan, and we cannot promise an outcome, but we can make sure you have exactly what they ask for.

What is included with every package?

Every package includes the same care and the same team. A 60 minute consultation, unlimited phone, text, and email access, a check-in with our Lactation Counselor, a free discovery call with a Registered Dietitian, our Postpartum Essentials Course and Postpartum Care Plan, digital Motherhood Affirmation Cards, and access to our provider network for pelvic floor therapy, chiropractic care, and mental health support.

What happens if my doula is not available?

You are matched with your own doula, and she has the whole How2Mom team behind her. If she is ever unavailable, or a question lands outside her lane, someone who knows your family steps in.
