Congratulations - you're having a baby!
Boy or girl? Do you have a name picked out? What’s your due date? Are you doing Vitamin K? Erythromycin? Hep B? Before your baby is even here, the questions start coming from everyone. Some are sweet and well-meaning, some are intrusive, and some are overwhelming.
As a mom myself, I get it — the questions never end. Looking back, I now see that these questions usually come from a place of excitement and love. The world can’t wait to welcome your little one! But when it comes to newborn procedures, things like:
- Vitamin K injection
- Erythromycin eye ointment
- Hepatitis B vaccine
…it gets complicated quickly.
There is so much information, misinformation, and so many strong opinions everywhere that it’s hard to know what’s truly evidence-based. Many parents feel caught between fear-based messages, outdated advice, and polarized opinions. And because there are no clear answers, everyone wants to know: What are YOU going to do?
And that’s exactly why we’re here , to discuss evidence-informed facts, with no fear.

That’s why we’re teaming up with How2Mom, a trusted resource for new mamas who want straightforward education without fear or judgment. No scare tactics. No agendas. Just solid, clear information.
You may be Asking: "What are the Standard Medical Procedures Performed on Newborns in Hospitals?"
The first hours after birth are packed with tiny moments you’ll never forget, and a handful of medical decisions you might not feel totally prepared for. So if you’re wondering, “What are the standard medical procedures performed on newborns in hospitals?” you’re not alone. Most parents ask this exact question.
The series will break down everything into simple, evidence-informed language so you know what’s offered, why it matters, and how to decide what’s right for your family.
Vitamin K for Newborns: What it is and Why it Matters
Newborns are born with very low — basically nonexistent — levels of Vitamin K, and it takes weeks for their bodies to reach safe, functional levels. Until then, their clotting system is essentially asleep at the wheel.
So… what happens when Vitamin K is low?
Vitamin K activates the body’s clotting cascade, the “please stop bleeding” system. Without it, even a tiny ouwie (a cut, bruise, or the giant squeeze through your vagina) can stress those teeny-tiny vessels enough that a microscopic hole opens… and the bleeding doesn’t stop.
This slow bleed can build silently in the background until suddenly your baby is seizing and you’re now dealing with IV Vitamin K (which is riskier than the intramuscular injection), while healthcare experts try to save your baby’s life and/or minimize long-term complications.
This, my friends, is why I, and reputable clinicians, recommend Vitamin K. It’s usually given as a quick shot into the fatty tissue of your baby’s thigh. But maybe you’re sitting here thinking, “Yeah, no thanks, I don’t want my newborn getting an injection right after birth.”
Totally fair. Many parents feel that way.
And what many healthcare providers don’t know, or simply don’t take the time to educate about, is that Vitamin K can also be given safely and effectively as an oral supplement. When it’s given correctly, oral K1 is a legitimate, evidence-supported option in many countries, and it absolutely can protect newborns when administered properly.
My job is to help you weigh the risks and benefits of both options so you can keep your baby safe and choose an approach that aligns with your family’s values.

Hep B Vaccine for Newborns: What it is and Why it's Offered at Birth
Two Basic Facts Every Parent Should Know About Hepatitis B
- Hepatitis B is a virus that attacks the liver and it can not be cured.
The birth dose of the Hepatitis B vaccine provides immediate protection when babies are most vulnerable to severe, chronic infection. Newborn immune systems simply cannot control this virus the way an adult immune system can. - Hepatitis B is not just a “lifestyle illness.”
It’s a highly contagious virus spread through blood and bodily fluids, and newborns have almost no natural immunity. If a baby is exposed, even through microscopic amounts of blood, they are unlikely to fight it off.
And if a newborn contracts Hepatitis B?
- 90% will develop lifelong, chronic infection – and this is irreversible.
For adults?
- Only 5-10% become chronic carriers.
Huge difference.
"But We're Low-Risk...Do We Really Need it at Birth?"
This is the question nearly every parent asks — and it’s reasonable.
If mom is Hep B negative…
Dad is negative…
No one in your circle has known risk factors…
Baby is not attending daycare… etc.
You might be wondering:
- Is the birth dose truly necessary?
- Can we delay it?
- Can we give it at the first pediatric visit?
- Can we skip it entirely?
These are thoughtful, legitimate questions, especially today, as national recommendations evolve and families want more personalized, values-aligned decision-making.
Vaccine at birth, vaccine later, or no vaccine at all, no option is risk-free.
Each path carries its own considerations, and each family brings its own values, comfort level, and risk factors to the table.
As we move forward with this blog series, we’ll take an in-depth, evidence-informed look at each approach so you can understand the why, not just the what, and feel confident choosing the path that aligns best with your family’s values.
Erythromycin Eye Ointment for Newborns: What it is and why Hospitals use it
Erythromycin is that little ribbon of eye ointment you often see in newborn photos. It works as a preventative, prophylactic antibiotic during your baby’s first delicate hours of life, helping protect their eyes from serious infection if specific bacterial exposures occurred during birth, particularly sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea, which can be passed to a baby even when the birthing parent has no symptoms at all.
Erythromycin helps prevent these bacteria from causing a serious eye infection called ophthalmia neonatorum. Historically, this infection was one of the leading causes of neonatal blindness because the damage, if untreated, can be irreversible. The routine use of erythromycin at birth has dramatically reduced its incidence.
Still, many parents understandably wonder whether this ointment is truly necessary. Our standard screening processes have improved significantly, and most birthing parents know their STI status long before delivery. So it’s natural to ask:
- Does my baby really need it if I tested negative?
- What happens if I’m negative and my baby still receives the ointment?
- If I’m not negative, what are the actual risks to my newborn?
These are valid and important questions — and exactly what we’ll explore as we continue this series.
